The only downsides I can find are with some joints. The shoulders and elbows are pretty good, but it would be nice if they were just a bit more stiff. The waist seems really loose though, which I think is compensated for by having the grill fold in a bit.
He stands very well, even while hold his gun and axe, whether or not the jet pack is on. The transformation process is super easy, and I love the redesign to accommodate the hands vs. removing them like the old toy. As a truck, I wish the arms and cab locked into place just a bit more, similar to how the legs lock together.
My biggest complaint though? There's no trailer?!! 😂 Hopefully they would consider a secondary set to add the original trailer design of the G1 toy.
Overall, very happy with this purchase and the build process. Considering this is more for display, I don't mind the loose joints.
It's a great gift as a display piece but not as a "play" toy. Can't even transform without it coming apart at the waist portion
First lego tempted to buy a glue to hold that section in
The Good:
Optimus Prime is beautifully crafted in all his G1 glory. The detail is astounding and the chrome highlights are an excellent touch. The inclusion of the various weapons are a delight as well. This 1500 piece set has a nice heft to it. You know you're holding it.
The Bad:
The thumbs can be a little flimsy, so be careful when handling or moving the figure. The ion cannon attaches to the arm, rather than being gripped in the hand.
The Awful:
The joint in the middle of the torso is EXTREMELY loose and makes for a wobbly and slightly unstable toy. Grasping the toy incorrectly can result in an unscheduled disassembly. Be gentle.
Overall 9/10
loves it! All lego prices were there, nothing missing. Was delivered NOT in a Amazon box and for what the product is and cost It should of been boxed up! Lucky my son didn't open the door when it was delivered as he would of seen what he was getting. Over all he loves it so thats the main thing.
Now, the drawbacks. I was missing a piece, but there ended up being a backup piece in a later bag that was close enough for now. Additionally, the joints are not super stable or robust. I blame this on the transforming abilities and the way the midsection especially has to bend and shift between forms, but right where you want to pick him up is exactly where he's weakest.
Also, the build instructions were unclear enough that at several points I had to tear down and fix things I thought were correct but later ended up being wrong.
It also continues the general flaw of many LEGO sets where it clearly has you building up using many smaller pieces where a single larger or more standard piece would have served better. It feels like an attempt to inflate the piece count for marketing without adding anything to the build itself. But LEGO sets do that all the time, it's not unique or even excessive to Optimus here.
Overall I love him, but I would definitely put his overall quality below that of the Voltron set.
It looks really cool, though!
Item itself was fine, star was lost for the box.
