This outdoor smoker, grill, and air fryer is extremely well-made, solid, and durable; I can't believe I can add smoke flavor to my food now using an electric appliance. This Ninja XL model is an upgrade over the previous model, however I should point out that the upgrade was just in size, not in features. This model is larger than the previous one but has less modes; since it is a 4 in 1 appliance, but the size upgrade is very helpful for preparing large meals since I can easily fit two whole chickens and I believe I can fit a 20 pound turkey, but I have yet to try this. I'm lucky to have a close by GFCI outlet in my backyard; otherwise, I would have needed a long extension cord because the supplied power cord is just 2 to 3 feet long. Cleaning the pan and the smoker is easy; I rinsed and dried the pan and used a damp towel to clean the smoker.
This smoker does not come with a stand, which I would have loved. I would have loved to see a griddle pan as well. It does, however, come with a probe with which I can set the desired temperature and it will notify me when the food is done. The included instruction book was not designed specifically for this model because every QR code I scanned in the book took me to a page where I had to download the mobile app, but this model does not have WiFi like the Woodfire Connect model. Aside from that, it's a fantastic appliance that I'm sure I'll be using for years to come, and I've been recommending it to my friends and family.
Included is a non-stick grill surface, an air crisp basket, temperature probe, 2 small bags of pellets, a grease tray and liner, a pellet scoop, and documentation. The build quality is pretty good and about what I’ve come to expect from Ninja. The base and handles are plastic, and the lid is cast aluminum. It features an intuitive digital control panel, a convection fan, an integrated temp probe port, and temp probe storage.
It’s easy to use, simply plug it in, fill the pellet hopper, choose the mode temperature and cook time, then press ignite. Wait for it to preheat and display “add food”, then start cooking.
In “grill” mode on the “Hi” temperature setting, I was able to heat the cooking surface to almost 560 degrees which is hot enough for searing (barely), and it heats pretty evenly.
Most importantly, this is capable of producing great food in a variety of cooking styles (grill, smoke, bake, air fry, etc..). The grill will fit some large cuts, but not all. You could cook a whole chicken (even two), but maybe not a turkey (depending on size). You won’t fit a whole packers brisket or a full rack of ribs, but almost anything else should fit (roasts, pork shoulder/butt, ham, etc…). This even has a cold smoke feature (haven’t tried it), for cheeses, salmon, bacon, etc…
The nonstick grill and air crisp basket are NOT dishwasher safe (which is disappointing). The cord is only about 2ft, so you will need to supply an appropriately rated extension cord. You cannot use abrasives to clean the nonstick surface and I would assume this also means you shouldn’t use metal utensils.
According to Ninja you are only supposed to use their pellets which are extremely expensive by comparison. I could not tell any difference between their pellets and other brands I use, so I have to believe this is simply a marketing tactic to get people to buy their overpriced pellets.
Overall, this a modern outdoor cooking gadget that is easy to use and produces great tasting food. It is particularly good for apartment dwellers, or anyone with limited space or living in a community with restrictions on BBQ fuel sources. That said, it could be better. I would have liked it to have a longer cord, dishwasher safe parts, and an included cover.
