-DEEP BREATH-
That said, this lego model was a joy to build. It is complicated to some degree but following each step will produce the functional model. The wings fold and flap and the landing gear and rear entry ramp fold open with some pretty amazing mechanics.
There are some pretty amazing lego parts in this kit which I have not seen before. It is dubbed as a Lego "icons" series model but it is very technics oriented. It is a superb design and utilization of lego parts. It is also very large. It contains 1369 pics, 8 minifigures, it's 31 inches wide, 22 inches long, so it is a very large model. There is a 3rd party kit for LED lights by Bricksmax that looks pretty good. I haven't added it to it but it definately adds to the overall experience with these.
I'm 110% glad I bought this one. I just wish the seller took more care of the product. Senselessly damaged box. Perhapse the seller is just too cheep to provide adequate shipping for their products?
Build Experience:
Assembly complexity is on par with other adult sets—engaging but manageable. The design choices are thoughtful throughout, and if you have spare pieces, you can easily customize aesthetic details (e.g., replacing visible red pins) for an even cleaner finish.
Value:
Given the model’s accuracy and display quality, the price is justified. It’s a strong addition for both Dune enthusiasts.
Verdict:
Highly recommended—both as a rewarding build and as a centerpiece for display.
Still, the mini figs and overall build are worth it!
This was a fun build, and comes with some great mini figures. The ship looks great, and the wing functions are really cool (folding, flapping).
If you are a Dune fan, or just a fan of Sci Fi in general, I would recommend grabbing one of these sets.
USE THE LEGO APP not the book.
There are nitpicks, the set is large and heavy, so it can be difficult to get the wings working just right. There is some repetition to the build for the wings but it’s not a large part of the build so it’s okay. It is a unique set and I’m super happy to have it in my collection.
Also, since it’s a “nerd” set, there are lots of mods online for this one. For example, you could build it using alternative parts to better conceal some of the technic fasteners. I didn’t bother but this is further evidence that this set is one of the great sets!!
Would not recommend for younger kids because it’s a complicated build
I'm currently starting the refund process.
[EDIT]: After doing some research, it seems I may have miss-judged. It seems my package was a bit roughed up, that's why most of the pieces show scratches. I will not refund it as it seems to be just OK.
The design and engineering of it are both awesome, the landing gear opens up and locks into place so it can stand on it, the cockpit opens and has a seat connected with only 2 studs so you can take it out and replace minifigures easily, the wings fold back and open up and flap up and down with a satisfying spring mechanism (there are some lego technic parts snuck in for the mechanisms), and its all surprisingly sturdy.
Also, how can you not love the flying Baron Harkkonen figure?
I have one problem with this set and that is they need to make more from this franchise.
Great product either way just wish it didn’t come like that.
One of the standout features of this set is the attention to detail. The designers have done an incredible job replicating the intricate design of the ornithopter, from its sleek aerodynamic shape to the intricate mechanical elements. Every aspect, from the rotating wings to the cockpit with detailed instrumentation, is meticulously crafted and stays true to the source material.
The build experience is also highly enjoyable, with clear instructions and high-quality LEGO pieces that fit together seamlessly. Whether you're a seasoned LEGO builder or a newcomer, assembling the Atreides Royal Ornithopter is both satisfying and rewarding.
Once completed, the set makes for an impressive display piece. The ornithopter's size and level of detail make it a standout addition to any LEGO collection or Dune-themed display. The included display stand adds to its presentation, allowing you to showcase the model in all its glory.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter 1032 set offers great playability. The rotating wings and adjustable cockpit provide opportunities for imaginative play, allowing fans to recreate iconic scenes from the Dune universe or come up with their own adventures.
Overall, this LEGO set is a triumph, combining excellent design, enjoyable building experience, and impressive display value. Whether you're a Dune enthusiast or simply appreciate finely crafted LEGO models, the Atreides Royal Ornithopter is sure to impress and become a cherished part of your collection.
The entire interior of the ornithopter is dedicated to the mechanism to open and close the wings and the landing gear. No seats, no little computers, no space for minifigs except the two seats in the cockpit. This is not a play piece - it's an engineering marvel. You fold a piece back and forth to fold/unfold the wings. Rotate a piece on the side to open/close the landing gear. And press a spring-loaded piece on the back to flap the wings.
About 70% of the build is assembling the controls for these moving parts, and the payoff is soooo worth it. If you love the Dune movies (go see the second one in theaters! It's worth it!), you will love this set. Very satisfied with all the characters they chose for minifigs and very satisfied with the function of the wings. This set might actually supplant the Saturn V as my centerpiece...
As a piece of Dune collectible movie and book accurate memorabilia it is simply brilliant. The movie team did a lot of work to make the ornithopters book accurate, which is hard since the technology of that universe is drastically different than ours. Getting the high beat rate wings looking realistically like they could fly and be flown like a super maneuverable helicopter and airplane in one was -- for a Dune nerd -- one of the highlights of how the film was made. Their look was excellent, and this emulates it as well as Lego possibly can I think.
As a Lego kit, sheer brilliance isn't expressive enough. I am a huge fan of Lego with many kits displayed in my home, including the Saturn V, ISS, Shuttle Discovery, Technic Mobile crane and others. Most of them don't draw me to play with them. This one does!!!
Drawing on Technic approaches and techniques to build a kit that is large but playable is pure genius. The flapping ability of the wings would be one thing, but to combine it with a mechanism that also allows for them to properly fold back like they do in the film is just superbly done. The landing gear being fully operational and able to hold the ornithopter's weight is unique and a great touch for making this a superbly displayable piece of art.
The minifigs are clever, a great selection of characters and fit perfectly with the display. It is a little odd given this is clearly intended to be a display piece that they did not include a stand similar to what is included with the 1989 Batmobile, Batplane and the Tumbler kits that include multiple character minifigs. I built one of my own, but this is a bit of an odd exclusion and a rare miss from Lego on this front. Many of the "adult fan" display-ready kits include the simple little stand so this was a little disappointing. The Baron fig is a simple stroke of superior attention to detail with him being suspensored on a clear stick stand. I would have liked a Rabban figure maybe instead of Liet, but they're all great and to get such a generous quantity of figs with a ~1300 piece kit is really great and makes the is an outstanding value kit.
This can be played with!!!!, which is part of the brilliance of it. Many of these display "fan kits" can't. The Saturn V for instance is too fragile to really be messed with roughly (though it can be used as a teaching tool with care), but this is built intentionally so that you can hold it by the tail and use the button to flap the wings; to also then allow for the wings to fold with one lever was just Lego engineering at its finest. It's sheer masterfulness of design and execution.
When I started to understand what the engineering would allow for, I was expecting a rough build. Many of the kits that incorporate so much Technic into them tend to be difficult builds because the interior is designed to "do" things or provide a structural element that is hidden. This is not a difficult build, however. The Technic elements that provide the struts for the wings and the folding mechanism are just superbly designed. Execution with pieces I've never seen before and that are simply some of the most well thought out I've seen. At 1369 pieces it's not the biggest kit I've worked, and it took me about 3.5 hours in a single session to finish. As always, the instructions were clear and the instruction book is a part of the collectibility.
Even if you're not a Dune-head, this kit is well worth adding to your display collection. Get it while you can.
I do wish the sides had less exposed bricks and red clip pieces, but the build overall is fun, challenging and overall a good time. Worth every penny for what it is!
Recomendations:
If you are a Dune fan, this is a must have
Watch Dune while building it
Take ur time, this is a complex model and if u mess up, ur gonna have to rebuild some aspects of it
If you are a Lego fan but not a Dune fan
Cons: too many exposed, bright red and blue technic pieces that take away from the looks.
If you want a great display piece, this may not be for you as they spent a lot of time on the functions/playability vs the looks.
Update: Lego is shipping the missing piece!
As for the review mentioning a missing piece. As I said, I’ve built hundreds of sets- never had a single missing piece. Almost 100% of the time, it’s the person building not being thorough. They’ll spend hours scouring the floor but not think to look back in the bag. That’s almost ALWAYS where a “missing” piece is.
In any case, LEGO will rush out a replacement for that piece you probably threw in the trash.
This set is a great value. Number of minifigs is insane. And it may be the only Dune set we get.
There are some compromises made to accommodate the functional flapping wings and the retractable landing gear, but I feel they’re quite acceptable.
Some early reviewers have noted the use of certain colors in the Technics work. I feel it’s 50/50. Sure, they could have used available black colored pieces in place of the red and blue, but I like the use of those colors to break up the black and gray. If you want, you can always aquire the appropriate pieces in black, if you want to be a purist.
There is room for three mini-figs in the cockpit. I do wish the Paul Atreides figure looked just a little more mature. Overal, the figures included are ver6 nice.
Because of the amount of Technics needed to allow the wing flapping and the retractable landing gear, there is no space inside the body of the ‘thoper for figures. That’s fine for me as the cockpit hols three.
The instruction bookletis very clear, so I can’t wait to tear into this next week.
Trying to find a lightin kit for it, and possible a display case. Just wish I had the space to display with the wings unfolded!
